Nukuoro. Sculptures from Micronesia
The unique tino aitu sculptures of Nukuoro belong to an art tradition that has its roots in Polynesia. In the contributions to this volume, which also includes for the first time English translations of two early German sources, the authors explore the sculptures’ extraordinary aura, shed light on their original cultural context and trace their collection histories, at imes quite controversially. The pieces collected by Johann S. Kubary and originally held by the Museum Godeffroy are joined by a number of more recent works. Technical analyses and keen observations by the authors from both art-historical and anthropological perspectives offer insight into the sculptures’ styles and functions. In addition, detailed photographs provide ready access to these remarkable artworks, even for the non-specialist reader. A catalogue raisonné covering the entire corpus of known sculptures allows for further comparisons.
