Fiji: Art & Life in the Pacific

This book is the first art history of Fiji as well as a fully illustrated catalogue of the largest exhibition ever assembled about Fijian art. The opening three chapters provide (1) An introduction to Fiji; (2) An historical overview with a focus on the nineteenth century, and on collecting and exchange relations between Fijians and Europeans; (3) An in-depth discussion of the significance of artworks in indigenous Fijian culture. The catalogue of 276 artworks includes extended captions and comprehensive collection data. Additional artworks and paintings illustrate the three chapters.

The book celebrates the richness and diversity of Fijian artworks and highlights the superb skills involved in creating them. The role of objects in embodying important relationships is emphasised, as is the creative adaptability of Fijians in the face of changes over the last two hundred years. Historic paintings, engravings and photographs supplement the texts. Exhibits are drawn from Fiji Museum, Cambridge, Oxford, the British Museum, Aberdeen and several other important collections. The book also includes 3 maps, glossary, timeline, bibliography, index and an appendix providing information on notable Fijians, collectors and institutions.
